Foreign currency revenues resulting from coffee exports

As the examples given above show, producers receive the price on the exchange, subject to quality-dependent bonuses or subtractions. As the price is subject to lesser or greater fluctuation - for the reasons stated above - foreign currency revenues for coffee in the producing countries vary from year to year.

The dependency of the producing countries on foreign-currency revenue from the export of coffee has generally decreased. On the other hand, the number of farmers and employees whose income is tied up with the production of and trade in coffee has remained more or less stable.

The following table shows the possible foreign currency revenues from coffee exports worldwide. The figures are based on an average of three coffee-producing years (2012/13 to 2014/15). The market price is based on the average stock value and corresponding quality-dependent bonus/deduction. The export price is based on the average for the same three years.

Foreign currency earnings from green coffee exports have decreased by 2% only since 2011/2012 as lower prices were partly compensated by an increase of 17% in volume. Major dependence on export of green coffee as part of the economy in leading coffee producing countries remain apparent in Ethiopia, Uganda, Guatemala and Honduras.
