Foreign currency revenue from coffee exports

As the examples given above show, producers receive the price on the exchange, subject to quality-dependent bonuses or subtractions. As the price is subject to lesser or greater fluctuation - for the reasons stated above - foreign-currency revenues for coffee in the producing countries vary from year to year.

The dependency of the producing countries on foreign-currency revenue from the export of coffee has generally decreased. On the other hand, the number of farmers and employees whose income is tied up with the production of and trade in coffee has remained more or less stable.

The following table shows the possible foreign-currency revenues from coffee exports worldwide. The figures are based on an average of three coffee-producing years (2009/10 to 2011/12). The market price is based on the average stock value and corresponding quality-dependent bonus/deduction. The export price is based on the average for the same three years.

Foreign-currency earnings from coffee exports have risen by 44% since 2007/2008. Coffee nevertheless remains a minor part of the economy of leading coffee-producing countries, as total exports have likewise risen by 33%. Major dependence on coffee in this respect is apparent in Guatemala, Honduras, Ethiopia, Nicaragua and Uganda.
